Advent:  The Roots of Our Hope

 

with Dr. Florence Gillman

 

Dr. Gillman is a Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Louvan, Belgium and is the author of three books and numerous articles.   She speaks both in the US and abroad, and recently completed a lecture tour in China.  She is married and has a daughter who in college.

The Christian Tradition of Advent:

  What is its meaning?

 

Advent, as preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus, recalls both the situation into which Jesus was born and the beliefs of the Jewish tradition that prepared for him.   This lecture will survey how Christianity emerged from those beliefs, came to understand the identity of Jesus as foretold by the Hebrew prophets, and has continued to find hope in the meaning of his birth.

Now that Christmas and the season leading up to it have become dominated in the U.S. by commerical interests, what does a Christian do to probe the deeper meaning?  What would the writers of the gospels and epistles advise?

Preparing for and Celebrating Jesus' Birth:

  Traditions we have learned and pass on

 

Are we using and passing on church and family Advent and Christmas traditions that truly communicate the roots of Christianity's understanding about the birth of Jesus and the hope he offers us?   Let's assess ourselves in the light of both gospel and theological traditions! 

Participate in one, two, or all three sessions.

 

Child care will be provided and rides are available upon request.

 

In order to plan for handouts, refreshments, childcare, and rides, please sign up after Masses on the week-ends of November 21-22 or 28-29, 2009.
